Approvals and documentation get you certified. They don’t fly the aircraft. Every commercial RPAS operation still comes down to a pilot reading the airspace, judging the weather, and making a defensible call – often alone, often under time pressure.

The Operational Knowledge Hub brings the core operational knowledge areas together in one place: airspace, weather, aviation systems and terminology, and operational decision-making. Each is written in plain English and aligned with real requirements under Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Part 101.

Who it’s for: ReOC holders, Chief Remote Pilots (CRPs), commercial operators, and enterprise RPAS programs – anyone who has to apply the rules, not just hold the certificate.

Why this matters

Most RPAS incidents aren’t caused by equipment failure. They’re caused by knowledge gaps: airspace misread, weather misjudged, a NOTAM missed, or a decision made without a consistent framework behind it.

This hub targets those gaps directly – the specific areas where good operators get caught out, and where a working understanding is the difference between a routine job and an incident report.

What you’ll find in this section

Nine focused topics, grouped into four areas. Use them in the order that suits you – during flight planning, when training new crew, or as a refresher before an unfamiliar operation.

1. Understanding airspace

Australian Airspace → How Australian airspace is structured and what each part means for you: Classes A-G, controlled versus uncontrolled airspace, CTAF and aerodrome environments, and how RPAS operations interact with crewed traffic. This is the foundation everything else builds on.

Special Use Airspace → Identify and plan around the airspace that carries the highest regulatory risk: Restricted Areas (RA1/RA2/RA3), Prohibited Areas, Danger Areas, and Military Operating Areas – what each one actually restricts, and how to check its status before you fly.

2. Charts, NOTAMs and aviation language

Aviation Maps and Charts → Read and interpret the charts used in Australian airspace – VTC, VNC and WAC – including airspace boundaries and classifications, aerodrome data, and terrain and obstacle awareness, then apply them in real flight planning.

NOTAMs → Access and decode Notices to Air Missions using systems like NAIPS: location versus area briefings, temporary airspace restrictions, hazard and activity notifications, and where your responsibilities as an operator begin and end. Among the most commonly overlooked pre-flight checks.

Aviation Terminology and Decoders → Make sense of the language: common abbreviations, NOTAM decoding, weather code interpretation, and chart symbology, with worked examples for RPAS operators. If you can’t interpret the information, you can’t act on it.

3. Weather and environmental decision-making

Weather for RPAS Operations → How weather affects the aircraft and the operation: wind and gusts, temperature effects on battery performance, visibility and cloud, forecasts versus actual conditions, and the limits of aviation weather products when applied to low-level RPAS flight.

Weather Go / No-Go Decision Framework → Turn weather knowledge into consistent, defensible calls: define your operational limits in advance, interpret forecast against observed conditions, and work through go / no-go scenarios using a structured, risk-based process rather than gut feel.

4. The operator: fitness and compliance

Fitness for Duty → Being fit to operate is a requirement, not a courtesy. Covers the IMSAFE checklist, fatigue management, alcohol and drug considerations, and how stress and workload degrade decision-making – with practical guidance for calling yourself unfit.

Significant vs Non-Significant Changes → Know when a change to your operation must go to CASA and when an internal update is enough. Covers what constitutes a significant change (personnel, aircraft, operations), when approval is required, and a decision framework to keep you on the right side of the line – an area operators regularly get wrong.
